WERNER FORMAN ARCHIVE
STRIKING IMAGES OF THE MONUMENTS, ART AND ARTEFACT OF THE WORLD'S MANY CULTURES

The major part of the transparencies in the Werner Forman Archive is now available as high resolution scans and these can be viewed at www.werner-forman-archive.com

In the early days of his long career, Werner Forman amassed thousands of colour negatives during his travels in remote and inaccessible regions of the world. There are photographs of life in the monasteries of Outer Mongolia, of the architecture and art in museums in North Korea and North Vietnam prior to the Korean and Vietnamese wars and of the art collections of the Peking Palace Museum and numerous Chinese provincial museums to which Werner and his brother Bedrich travelled in 1956 prior to the Cultural Revolution.

Of great interest also, are the numerous photographs of the wall paintings in many tombs in western Thebes which have long been inaccessible.

In many cases, these photographs are a record of a lost heritage and it is our ambition to digitise the collection thus conserving them for the benefit of future generations

Nature Picture Library to represent Jane Burton cat and dog collections

Leading pet photographer Jane Burton has chosen Nature Picture Library to represent her cat photography.

"For most of my working life I have been a wildlife photographer," writes Jane Burton, "but about fifteen years ago a gradual change started to come about. Sensing a photo opportunity, I began to take in homeless cats for a local animal rescue charity. Soon I found myself fostering thirty or forty moggies at a time, and a few aristocats too, while they waited for kind new homes to go to. Inevitably some cats came in pregnant, so there were families of cute kittens as a bonus. Cats are amazing animals, with complicated and fascinating lives, just as interesting and worthy of study as any wild animal. Working with them on a plain white background allows me to capture clearly their graceful and athletic shapes, often hilarious postures or dignified poses."

NPL now has a comprehensive collection of Jane's domestic cat images, ranging from breed portraits and cute cats to life cycle and behaviour. Jane also documents adults and children enjoying and caring for their cats. In 2007 NPL will be adding a collection of Jane's domestic dog photography.

MARY EVANS
Mary Evans Picture Library conjures up sweet memories at the Picture Buyers' Fair

Mary Evans Picture Library, the UK's leading source for historical images, will be prescribing a sweet treat for visitors to this year's Picture Buyers' Fair. As well as giving away copies of The Mary Evans Little Book of Nostalgia, the library will be taking the nostalgic theme further by recreating a 1930s sweet shop. The stand will come complete with jars of boiled sweets such as barley sugars, an antique cash register and confectionery advertisements from the library's own collection.

Mary Evans aims to make the stand a truly interactive experience, and have even produced their own currency, with 1d notes from the Bank of Mary Evans given to attendees on entry to the show. Visitors to the Mary Evans stand can use this freshly minted money to purchase a bag of boiled sweets, transporting them back to a bygone age of penny chews, gobstoppers and mercury fillings!

Picture buyers can also pick up a copy of The Little Book of Nostalgia, a gift book celebrating the spirit of yesteryear with images selected by the staff of Mary Evans from their vast collection, and stuffed with interesting historical facts and trivia.

"In an industry awash with sales promotion items, we wanted to give away something truly covetable, even collectible, which captured the essence of Mary Evans, as well as represented the eclecticism of the library", says Luci Gosling, Business Development Manager. "Nostalgia is something we can all relate to, even though everyone's idea of it can differ. We wanted to produce something that people could engage with and hopefully enjoy reading as much as we enjoyed putting it together."

Selected, written and designed by the Mary Evans team, the book is very much a labour of love and a reflection of a broad collection, rich in variety. The theme of the stand aims to celebrate the current vogue for nostalgia, as well as providing a much-needed sugar boost for flagging fair-goers!

Visitors to the Picture Buyers' Fair can find Mary Evans Picture Library at stand number 86.

OnAsia
OnAsia to launch Desktop Keywording Software

OnAsia will be demonstrating its Windows-based keywording software 'Image Keyworder' at the upcoming BAPLA Picture Buyers' Fair 07 fair in London this May.

Designed to make adding and managing metadata quicker and easier thanks to its integrated Thesaurus, Image Keyworder features template and batch functions that allow users to apply keywords, captions and other metadata to groups of images.

The highlight of Image Keyworder is its built-in thesaurus. Users will gain access to a regularly updated database of over 40,000 terms including synonyms, alternate forms, singulars and plurals and most UK/US spelling variations. The database of terms has been specifically designed for the classification of imagery. OnAsia gained valuable experience by keywording archives such as the National Gallery's painting collection so you will, for example, find many famous painters and artists listed in the Thesaurus. You will also find conceptual terms, Latin names for flora and fauna or even Premiership and NFL teams.

The price of the new software package has not been confirmed but OnAsia representatives said they expect Image Keyworder to be available for £40 to £50 per license (valid for two computers). Part of the license fee will be a 12 month subscription to OnAsia's thesaurus which will be constantly updated and enriched, the company said.

For more information or to arrange a demonstration of Image Keyworder at the PBF fair please contact Yvan at info@onasiadigital.com

ANIMAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Designer’s Dream - Animal Photography relaunches at PBF

Designers looking for fresh image ideas can now use a specialist picture library created with their needs in mind. Animal Photography, source of quality images shot by top animal photographer Sally Anne Thompson, is being relaunched at the Picture Buyers’ Fair by design studio Heat Design.

The library has the largest collection of dog breeds with two hundred and eighty major world breeds. The library also holds a stunning collection of cats, horse breeds from around the world, farm animals, small pets and wild animals

Stephen Taylor, MD of Heat Design discovered the images when sharing a studio in Marylebone with the original library owner, Sally Anne’s late brother, John de Forest Thompson.

‘I was very excited when I discovered the collection’ says Taylor. ‘ The animals are always top of breed, and the images have a purity and quality you don’t find elsewhere. As well as showing the important features of dog and horse breeds, Sally Anne has the ability to get close to the essence of the animal. Many of the images are very suited to design briefs.’

‘Now we have the ideal combination: adding Heat’s understanding of the creative world to the specialist eye of the photographer.  ’

As one of the leading sources of environmental images in the UK, Ecoscene has a comprehensive collection of images to illustrate environmental issues, both good and bad. A wide range of images can be found on our website www.ecoscene.com and there is a downloadable facility for approved clients. There are many more in our files, so
